Meiji Restoration: The Opening of Japan

Meiji Restoration

The Meiji Era was known as Japan's "enlightenment" or "age of brightness." The Meiji Restoration started in 1868, after the Tokugawa system was replaced with a centralized power, and continued until 1912. In this time period rapid industrialization and modernization took place within Japan. This is Japan's response to the outside pressure from the Western, more modernized, nations.
